TORONTO, July 28, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fairfax India Holdings Corporation (TSX: FIH.U) announces a net loss of $69.6 million in the second quarter of 2022 ($0.50 net loss per diluted share), compared to net earnings of $224.9 million in the second quarter of 2021 ($1.43 net earnings per diluted share).

Highlights for the second quarter of 2022 included the following:

  • Net change in unrealized losses on investments of $117.6 million, principally from a decrease in the fair value of the company's investments in Sanmar ($91.7 million), IIFL Securities ($21.5 million), IIFL Wealth ($11.0 million) (net of unrealized gains of $18.9 million related to a forward sale derivative) and CSB Bank ($9.8 million), partially offset by an increase in the fair value of IIFL Finance ($43.0 million). Net change in unrealized losses on investments also included a reversal of prior period unrealized gains of $21.9 million as a result of sales of investments in Other Public Indian Investments.
  • Net realized gains on investments of $27.9 million principally related to sales of investments in Other Public Indian Investments resulting in a realized gain since inception of $28.4 million.
  • The company continued to buy back shares under its normal course issuer bid and in the first six months of 2022 purchased for cancellation 2,100,443 subordinate voting shares at a net cost of $26.3 million ($12.51 per subordinate voting share).
  • In accordance with the Investment Advisory Agreement, which provides for the payment of a performance fee of 20% of the increase in book value per share in excess of a hurdle rate of 5% per annum, the company recorded a performance fee recovery of $47.0 million for second quarter of 2022 and at June 30, 2022 had accrued $31.4 million to the benefit of Fairfax Financial Holdings. The performance fee, if any, will only be finally determined on December 31, 2023 at the end of the three year measurement period.
  • At June 30, 2022 common shareholders' equity was $2,573.7 million, or book value per share of $18.50, compared to $2,774.8 million, or book value per share of $19.65, at December 31, 2021, a decrease of 5.9%, primarily related to unrealized foreign currency translation losses as a result of the weakening of the Indian rupee relative to the U.S. dollar and a net loss during the first six months of 2022, partially offset by the impact of share purchases for cancellation during the first six months of 2022.

Fairfax India is in strong financial health, with cash and marketable securities of approximately $209 million.

There were 139.3 million and 149.4 million weighted average common shares outstanding during the second quarters of 2022 and 2021 respectively. At June 30, 2022 there were 109,134,909 subordinate voting shares and 30,000,000 multiple voting shares outstanding.
