UK Banks H122: Solid Returns, No Deterioration Yet in Asset Quality

DBRS Morningstar has released a commentary discussing large UK banks’ H1 2022 earnings, covering HSBC Holdings plc, Barclays PLC, Lloyds Banking Group plc and NatWest Group plc (the banks).

Key highlights:

• The banks reported solid results in H1 2022 reflective of higher revenues with all banks showing net interest income (NII) increases year-over-year (YoY), while the UK mortgage market has not showed signs of being significantly affected by higher rates.

• The cost of living pressure created by high inflation and higher interest rates in the UK is not visible in this set of results. The reported annualised cost of risk remained low and we see no deterioration in asset quality at this stage.

• DBRS Morningstar expects the banks to maintain solid capital cushions to weather a deteriorating economic outlook.

“The large UK banks reported a solid H1 with no signs of asset quality deterioration yet. However, the BOE is now expecting the UK to enter recession from Q4 this year and has yesterday increased its base rate further by 50 bps. Going forward, we would therefore expect asset quality to deteriorate given the UK economic outlook is weakening and insolvencies are increasing” said Vitaline Yeterian, Senior Vice President, Global Financial Institutions, DBRS Morningstar.
