U.S. Structured Finance Newsletter: Cycle of Economic Expansion: How Long Will It Continue?

The current cycle of economic expansion has just surpassed its ninth anniversary, the second-longest period of U.S. economic expansion since the 1850s. The longest economic expansion in the United States lasted ten years from March 1991 to March 2001. Two questions are currently being debated: Will the current cycle exceed that ten-year period? And if so, how long can it extend? In comparison, Australia has gone approximately 27 years without a recession and other countries, such as England, Canada and Japan, have experienced expansions of 15 years or more.
