Morningstar | Mineral Resources Derisks Lithium Assuming USD 1.15 Billion Albemarle Deal Progresses

Mineral Resources listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2006 and caught the best years of the Western Australian iron ore boom. Revenue, profit, and market capitalisation all grew significantly, but are expected to rely more heavily on lithium production going forward. The company's failure to disclose the split between recurring revenue from iron ore crushing and nonrecurring contracting tied to the capital cycle means operating leverage and profit sustainability are uncertain. In addition, the company does not clearly report the revenue and earnings contributions from its mining services businesses, making analysis problematic. We expect a well-supplied lithium market in the longer term, coupled with weaker demand growth for steel, particularly from China, to drive lower prices and reduce the pool of available contracting work. Despite this, we think Mineral Resources can drive EPS growth on volume.
