Insight School of Washington to Celebrate Class of 2017

Insight School of Washington (ISWA), a statewide online public school, will celebrate the Class of 2017 with an in-person graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 17 at Bellevue College.

This spring, 367 students will graduate from ISWA, which provides students in grades 9-12 throughout the state with the opportunity to get back on track academically in a distraction-free environment. Each student receives an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), which is informed by state-certified teachers who work with students to make sure the lesson plans are based on the student’s needs and the progress the student has made to date, as well as the student’s personal interests and college and career aspirations.

Qualifying students have the opportunity to enroll in college courses tuition-free through the Running Start Program, offered by their local community college, earning credits toward both a high school and college degree.

Additionally, ISWA offers a Social-Emotional Learning component called “The Seven Mindsets” through a homeroom advisory model tailored to provide students with the encouragement, strategies and confidence to become successful young adults. Moreover, the school provides opportunities for credit recovery, which enables students to concentrate on courses in a condensed schedule to help them get back on track and graduate from high school on time.

Three ISWA students have been named co-valedictorians of the Class of 2017. Michaila Hutchinson will attend Olympic College in the fall with plans to transfer to the University of Washington. ISWA’s National Honor Society secretary, she is on the Teen Advisory Board for the Kitsap Regional Library System and volunteers at the Beacon Food Forrest in Seattle. Bronte Mayo, who is graduating as a junior, is accomplished in modern dance – she was a National YoungArts Foundation finalist in 2017 – and she will attend The Julliard School this fall to continue her study of modern dance. Finally, Yasmine Panchmatia hopes to attend med school with an emphasis in the brain or surgery. She currently volunteers in Redmond caring for horses.

In addition, Marissa Recker is the school’s salutatorian. She plans to attend Kings College in New York City this fall to pursue a media culture and arts degree. Marissa actively volunteers with the Salvation Army and is the president of ISWA’s National Honor Society and the president and founder of the school’s Ribbon Club for community service.

“Our students have worked so hard to get to this day,” said Jeff Bush, head of school at Insight School of Washington. “We are so proud of everything they have accomplished and can’t wait to see what they do next.”

Former Seattle Sounder Michael Tetteh will deliver the keynote address. Having overcome tremendous obstacles in his youth while growing up in Ghana, Tetteh’s story is a remarkable journey from destitute poverty to professional soccer.

Members of the Class of 2017 report that they have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including Central Washington University, Western Washington University, Arizona Culinary Institute, University of Texas-Arlington, Washington State University, University of Houston-Downtown, Kings College, Utah State University, Indiana University, The Julliard School and University of Washington, among others.

Media is welcome to attend this event. Details are as follows:
