Maine Virtual Academy to Honor Second Graduating Class at In-Person Commencement

Maine Virtual Academy (MEVA), a statewide online public school program authorized by the Maine Charter School Commission serving grades 7-12, will celebrate the Class of 2017 at a graduation ceremony on Friday, June 9 at the Augusta Civic Center. This is the second graduating class for the school, which opened in 2015.

The Class of 2017 comprises of 51 graduates. Students plan to pursue higher education at colleges and universities including: University of Southern Maine, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, George Mason University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Toledo, Southern Maine Community College, York County Community College, and Columbus College of Art and Design, among others.

Sarah Penney and Will Napolitan will serve as co-valedictorians. Mary Smart is the salutatorian. Penney plans to attend the University of Maine. Napolitan plans to attend University College at Rockland and Smart plans to attend Eastern Maine Community College.

Co-valedictorians Penney and Napolitan will address the class, as will Head of School Dr. Melinda Browne.

MEVA faculty will present academic awards in core subjects including mathematics, science, English, social studies, and art. “Most improved” awards will also be awarded.

MEVA students leverage a rigorous online curriculum. Students can choose from the diverse middle and high school K12 course catalogue, including many electives not offered in traditional schools. Each student has greater freedom to progress through lessons at his or her own pace, while receiving quality instruction, support and individual attention from teachers.
