Utah Virtual Academy to Celebrate Class of 2017

Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA), an accredited online public charter school for students statewide, will hold an in-person graduation ceremony on Friday, June 2 at 6 p.m. at East High School in Salt Lake City.

UTVA’s 120 graduates have benefitted from a rigorous and engaging curriculum, which enables students to find post-high school success. The school offers an active, supportive school community, a range of extracurricular activities and a robust Advanced Learner Program which allows high school students to get ahead by earning college credits through in-person and online concurrent enrollment opportunities.

UTVA also offers the Destinations Career Program, which prepares full-time students in grades 9-12 for college and careers and provides them with relevant technical skills in two career fields – information technology and health sciences.

UTVA recently received a silver STEM school designation from the Utah State Board of Education. The designation serves as an indicator for members of the public who are looking for quality science, technology, engineering and math school experiences in Utah K-12 education.

Cody Lawrence is the Class of 2017 valedictorian, and Catherine Kingston and Stephanie Nielsen are co-salutatorians. Eagle Mountain city administrator Ifo Pili, a BYU professor and retired professional football player, will deliver remarks to the graduating class, and UTVA teachers and staff will be in attendance to recognize the students’ achievements.

“Graduation is a wonderful time to celebrate the hard work and many accomplishments of our students and teachers,” said Meghan Merideth, head of school at Utah Virtual Academy. “It’s hard to say goodbye to our amazing students, but we are all so proud of them and we are excited to see what their futures hold.”

The Class of 2017 has been offered nearly $60,000 in college scholarships. The graduates report that they have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including the University of Alabama, Brigham Young University, Dixie State University, Salt Lake Community College, University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University and Westminster College.

Media are welcome at this event. Details are as follows:
