Wyoming Virtual Academy (WYVA), an accredited online public school for students across the state, will celebrate the Class of 2018 with an in-person graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. Niobrara County High School.
Wyoming state senator Stephan Pappas will deliver the keynote address. “Congratulations to the Wyoming Virtual Academy Class of 2018,” Pappas said. “Graduation is a time to celebrate great accomplishments. These talented students have worked hard to reach this significant milestone, and should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
Of this year’s 39 graduates, more than half are graduating with honors, having maintained a 3.25 grade-point average or higher. Five students who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout high school will serve as the co-valedictorians of the Class of 2018: Grace Belize Anderson (Devil’s Tower), Dylan Gosbee (Cheyenne), Kody Laing (Sheridan), Zachery Sothan (Cheyenne) and Raphel Tucker (Cheyenne). In addition, Megan Wuolle (Rock Springs) is the salutatorian.
“As my high school journey comes to an end, I know that I am prepared for what lies ahead because of the outstanding education I received at Wyoming Virtual Academy,” said Anderson, who has been with the school since seventh grade. “Moreover, thanks to the flexibility of the online curriculum, I was able to participate in many other activities that were important to me, including community service and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.”
Anderson, who plans to attend Liberty University in the fall, has received a host of community service awards after logging more than 500 volunteer hours in four years and this past year served as national president of FCCLA. She was also selected as a Wyoming state delegate to the 2017 United States Senate Youth Program.
The Class of 2018 has been offered more than $100,000 in college scholarships. The graduates report that they have been accepted to a number of colleges and universities, including University of Wyoming, Georgia Tech, Liberty University, University of San Francisco, Utah Valley University, Northwest College, Laramie County Community College and Sheridan College. Additionally, two students plan to join the military.
WYVA provides a personalized education experience that includes small-group opportunities, one-on-one teacher interaction and a rigorous and engaging curriculum. WYVA students access a robust online curriculum and attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers.
WYVA’s students have built strong relationships with their classmates during their time with the school. They interact with each other through their virtual classrooms, as well as discussion threads and instant messaging. In addition, WYVA offers regularly scheduled regional educational field trips and social outings throughout the school year, and graduation allows the students to celebrate their accomplishment together.
