In celebration of Black History Month, Comcast today announced a partnership with City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to honor 10 community volunteers at the first-ever Mayor’s History Makers Awards. Held at the Houstonian Hotel, the honorees will be recognized for their commitment to making a difference in the community through volunteerism, mentorship, advocacy and civic engagement.
“These exceptional individuals have demonstrated selfless commitment,” said City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “The History Makers Awards give us an opportunity to recognize those who have played a vital role in positive change in their communities while celebrating the diversity of this great city.”
In addition to being recognized, each honoree will be featured in a 30-second Public Service Announcement that will air on Comcast. Comcast will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of the honoree’s choice.

Honorees were judged on criteria that included their personal impact in the community, helping further the mission of a nonprofit organization and overcoming personal obstacles. Judges for the awards include the City of Houston’s first daughter Ashley Turner; Comcast Houston's Senior Vice President Ralph Martinez; United Way of Greater Houston President and CEO Anna Babin; Legacy Community Health CEO Katy Caldwell; Houston Mayor Pro-tem Jerry Davis; Career & Recovery Resources CEO Dr. Vern Swisher; and Chief Development Officer at the Montrose Center Kent Loftin.
