Dextera Surgical’s MicroCutter 5/80™ Honored as Finalist in 2017 Medical Design Excellence Awards

Dextera Surgical Inc. (Nasdaq:DXTR) today announced that the MicroCutter 5/80™ has been selected as a finalist in the operating room tools and equipment category of the 19th Annual Medical Design Excellence Awards competition. Winners of the competition will be announced at the 2017 MDEA Ceremony on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

The MDEA are the medtech industry’s premier design competition committed to recognizing significant achievements in medical product design and engineering that improve the quality of healthcare delivery and accessibility. The awards program celebrates the accomplishments of the medical device companies who are responsible for the cutting-edge products that are saving lives, improving patient healthcare, and transforming medtech—one innovation at a time.

“We are incredibly honored to be selected as a finalist in this competitive category and to be recognized among this year’s best medical innovations, providing validation for the innovative and unique design of our MicroCutter 5/80, the smallest articulating stapler in the world today,” said Julian Nikolchev, president and CEO of Dextera Surgical.

Liam Burns, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing added, “Our device enables less invasive procedures in multiple therapeutic areas. Currently, we are focusing our commercial efforts on video-assisted thoracic surgery, or VATS, where using the MicroCutter has been shown to reduce the length of hospital stays. Demand continues to grow in other surgical specialties, including pediatric surgery where the size of the MicroCutter 5/80 is a huge advantage. We look forward to bringing the benefits of this technology to more patients as we expand our launch activities for this breakthrough medical technology around the world.”

The 2017 MDEA Juror Panel selected exceptional finalists in nine medical technology product categories. Products were judged based on: patient benefits; design and engineering innovation; overall benefit to the healthcare system; function and user-related innovation; and business benefits. Unlike other design competitions that are merely styling contests, the MDEA jury comprises a balance of practicing surgeons, doctors, nurses, alongside industrial designers, engineers, manufacturers, and human factors experts.
