The Durham County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (ABC) in North Carolina is employing Intellicheck's (NYSE MKT:IDN) Age ID™ throughout the county to prevent the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors. At eight retail liquor store locations operated by the Durham County ABC Board, Age ID is being used by employees and sworn law enforcement officers to scan driver licenses and other forms of identification to catch altered and fake IDs.
Durham County, North Carolina has a large college student population. In addition to its resident population, it is home to Duke University and is in close proximity to several other large higher education institutions. Data from the State of North Carolina 2013 Report to Congress on the Prevention and Reduction of Underage Drinking reveals the scope of underage drinking issues that face enforcement officers and employees at retail liquor stores. According to the report, 20.7 percent of youths ages 15 to 17 reported they had used alcohol in the past month and 12.1 percent reported binge drinking in the same period. Among young people aged 18 to 20, 43.8 percent reported past month alcohol use and another 24.3 percent reported binge drinking during the prior 30-day period.
