Dr. Robert A. Van Steenwyk is currently a Cooperative Extension Specialist emeritus and Research Entomologist at the University of California, Berkeley. He has research and extension responsibilities for deciduous fruit, nut and vine crops for California and has an active applied research and extension program in integrated pest management with particular focus on reduced risk insecticides. Dr. Van Steenwyk received his Ph.D. in Economic Entomology with minors in Statistics and Biological Control from the University of California at Riverside in 1975. After graduation, Dr. Van Steenwyk’s research focused on pink bollworm in cotton and then later vegetable crop entomology at UCR before transferring to his current position at Berkeley in 1982. Dr. Van Steenwyk has published over 300 articles and been awarded over $7,000,000 for his research and extension programs during his career. He has served on research advisory boards for a number of California commodity boards, Exotic Pest Detection Panel for the California Dept. of Agriculture and Invasive Species Advisory Committee of the U.S. Dept. of Interior. As an international consultant for U.S. AID, Dr. Van Steenwyk developed entomological work plans for cotton, pulses and potatoes for Bangladesh. Dr. Van Steenwyk has been awarded numerous awards over his career including the Distinguished Service award for Outstanding Research and Outstanding Team for European Grapevine Moth from UC, Technology Transfer award for codling moth areawide suppression by USDA and the Cherry Man of the Year award from the cherry industry.
