Navient Foundation gives $10,000 grant to support college completion programs at University of Delaware

Grant will help first-generation and low-income students achieve academic success

WILMINGTON, Del., July 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This summer, incoming freshmen enrolled in the University of Delaware’s NUCLEUS Program will take steps to prepare for life and academic success at the university. The Navient Foundation, the company’s philanthropic fund, contributed $10,000 to the program to help cover costs like tuition, fees and books.

“This generous donation assists the NUCLEUS program in accelerating its efforts to provide outreach to incoming freshmen to deliver additional academic support to foster students to attain a college degree,” said Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean of student success, College of Arts and Sciences.

Students will participate in a five-week summer program prior to the start of their freshman year. The summer program includes a course and a weekly student success seminar designed to help students adapt to life and learning at the university. Upon completion, students will earn four college credits.

Participants will continue to have access to resources and tools throughout their undergraduate career.

“Higher education can lead to increased employment opportunities and higher lifetime earnings but college completion is the key,” said Patricia Nash Christel, vice president, Navient. “The Navient Foundation is proud to support University of Delaware’s innovative program to support student success.”

Research from Navient’s study found young adults who completed a college degree were more likely to be in "good" or "excellent" financial health, earn higher salaries, own a home, and be optimistic about future career prospects. By comparison, those who started college but left before completing fared worse on nearly all the indicators studied, even compared to those who never went to college.
