Odfjell SE 3Q18: Chemical tanker market remained unchanged from previous quarter

Odfjell SE today reported its results for Third Quarter 2018. The results reflect a stable chemical tanker market and stable underlying results from Odfjell Terminals when adjusting for the Rotterdam terminal.

Odfjell SE reports EBITDA of USD 32 million compared with USD 37 million in the previous quarter.

Highlights for the third quarter of 2018:

• EBITDA of USD 27 million from Odfjell Tankers compared to USD 28 million in second quarter

• ODFIX was down 2.0% for the quarter compared to the general market index declining by 3.7%

• EBITDA of USD 4 million from Odfjell Terminals compared to USD 9 million in second quarter

• USD 16 million of losses related to sale of the Rotterdam terminal that included currency translation and tax losses in addition to transaction costs

• Net results of USD -31 million compared to USD -120 million in last quarter

• Concluded the sale of our Rotterdam terminal in September

“The chemical tanker market remained depressed during the quarter, but we continue to believe that 2018 is the turning point for the chemical tanker markets. Adjusting for the Rotterdam terminal, our terminal division delivered stable results. We have positioned ourselves well for the future, both within tankers and terminals, with one of the most energy efficient fleets in the world”, said Kristian Mørch, CEO of Odfjell SE.

Odfjell SE (Buy, TP: NOK170.00) - Gear up for renewed momentum

We believe the low 3% swing tonnage and solid tanker outlook on increased OPEC+ volumes, an ageing fleet, and modest supply growth, along with higher chemical volumes, point to a strong chemical tanker outlook. We estimate a 2025 earnings yield of 26% and find Odfjell attractive at an average 2025–2026e P/E of 3.5x (tanker peers: 5.8x). We reiterate our BUY, but have cut our target price to NOK170 (180), mainly due to FX effects.

Another abrupt change

The US Trade Representative on 17 April published revised US port fees with significant changes to the initial proposal based on industry feedback. In its current form, the fees will primarily discourage use of Chinese-controlled maritime trade services to the US, and directly affect the use of Chinese-built vessels in US ports (with several considerable exemptions to avoid harm to US trade). The previous broader fees based on fleet composition and share of Chinese-built vessels has been scrappe...

Odfjell SE (Buy, TP: NOK180.00) - On course for a solid rebound

With chemical volumes up 8% MOM in March and accelerated unwinding of OPEC+ cuts, coupled with only 3% tanker deliveries in 2025e and a record-high average fleet age, we see healthy prospects. Hence, we believe Odfjell screens attractively on an 18% 2025–2026e dividend yield, trading at a 2.4x average 2025–2026e P/E (tanker peers: 4.7x). We reiterate our BUY, but have cut our target price to NOK180 (200).

‘The times they are a-changin’

The recurring theme at our 18th Energy & Shipping Conference was geopolitical uncertainty and a potential trade war, warranting a wait-and-see approach, particularly on the Trump 2.0 effect. The consensus view pointed to high asset values, with no rush to the yards, aligning with below-NAV valuations across most of our coverage. However, panellists generally saw less downside risk than the 25% average discount to steel for our Tanker, Dry Bulk and Gas coverage. Overall, the day highlighted uncer...
