Rogers 5G network, powered exclusively by Ericsson, will reach a total of 160 cities and towns across the country by the end of the week, offering 10x more coverage than any other carrier. Now customers in these locations on Rogers Infinite and Rogers for Business Shared Unlimited Data plans with compatible 5G devices will have access to this next generation wireless technology. More than 2.2 million Canadians are on 5G-ready Rogers Infinite unlimited data plans.

“We're proud to continue growing our 5G footprint across the province, bringing world-class connectivity to even more communities in Alberta,” said Larry Goerzen, President of Alberta and Prairies, Rogers Communications. “Strong digital infrastructure and this next generation technology are critical to fuelling productivity and innovation in the future and will drive prosperity for our province and Canada."

Today, Rogers also announced that it is starting to roll out Canada’s first 5G standalone core network, powered by Ericsson, in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, marking the next important step in evolving Rogers 5G network. Read more about this announcement

Expected to introduce new capabilities that are significantly more advanced than previous generations of wireless technology, 5G will transform businesses and industries with increased speed and capacity, more efficient use of spectrum and lower latency. 5G will also support a massive increase in the number of connected devices that require near instantaneous access for applications like earthquake prevention using AI and machine learning, autonomous mining and smart city applications such as collision prevention.

“The acceleration and expansion of 5G in our province is necessary to setting us up for long-term success and competitiveness in the modern economy,” said MLA Nate Horner, Drumheller-Stettler. “This announcement is great news for people across rural Alberta where the need is great for better and more reliable connectivity. The 5G network expansion is an opportunity for businesses and industry in my riding, and across Alberta, to have access to new technology that can make them more competitive, while attracting more investment to our region.”

“Alberta’s rural communities need and deserve to have access to first-class internet connectivity. I’m delighted to see that Wainwright and Lloydminster now have access to Rogers 5G,” said MLA Garth Rowswell, Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright. “Rogers 5G network expansion will help transform our province’s economy and could not be more timely given the increased need for online home schooling, shopping, conferencing and working from home.”

In addition to providing Canadians with the latest technology, wireless industry investments in 5G networks are expected to contribute an estimated $40 billion annually to the country’s economy and 250,000 permanent new jobs by 20264.

Rogers has invested over $30 billion over the past 35 years to build Canada’s most trusted and reliable wireless network. In 2020, the company was awarded the best wireless network in Canada for the second year in a row by , the global leader in mobile network testing and benchmarking. Rogers is also ranked number one in the West and Ontario in the 2020 Canada Wireless Network Quality Study. A recent 2020 report found Rogers wireless network delivers the most consistent speeds of any national wireless network in Canada.

A PwC study commissioned by the company indicates that in 2019 Rogers investments and operations resulted in a total economic footprint in Alberta of $1.4 billion of output, including over 3,300 full-time jobs generated and supported.
