Aussie Equities Month in Review - February 2020

  • Global equities fell by 0.6% after a strong start of the month was scuttled by the emergence of the Coronavirus.
  • Healthcare (12%), IT (11%), Communication Services (9%) and Consumer Staples (8%) saw strong returns.
  • The biggest hurdle for investors in Australia remains valuation.
  • Analysts seem relatively comfortable with full-year EPS estimates after the downgrade cycle, with earnings certainty is back to around normal levels for the ASX200 universe.
  • The Q4 19 inflation data was broadly in line with market expectations, although the employment data continues to track along better-than-expected.
  • Contractors DOW, SIM downgraded for mostly stock-specific reasons.

Blackmores Limited

Blackmores is engaged in the development, sales and marketing of health products for humans and animals including vitamins and herbal and mineral nutritional supplements. As of June 30 2016, Co. operated in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Crown Resorts Limited

Crown Resorts is an entertainment and gaming group. Co. owns and operates two resorts, Crown Melbourne, which features the Crown Towers Melbourne hotel, Crown Metropol Melbourne hotel, and the Crown Promenade Melbourne hotel; and Crown Perth, which features the Crown Metropol Perth hotel and the Crown Promenade Perth hotel. In the U.K., Co. owns and operates Crown Aspinall in London, a casino in the West End entertainment district. Co. also holds equity interest in Melco Crown Entertainment, a developer, owner and operator of resorts in Macau and the Philippines. The resorts include: City of Dreams Macau, Macau Studio City, and City of Dreams Manila.

Flight Centre Travel Group Limited

Flight Centre Travel Group is engaged in the travel retailing in both the leisure and corporate travel sectors, plus wholesaling.

Nearmap

NearMap is engaged in online aerial photomapping via its 100% owned subsidiaries, Nearmap Australia Pty Ltd. and Nearmap US Inc. Co. is an online PhotoMap™ content provider that creates maps. Co. licenses its content to a range of customers such as government agencies and the commercial sector as well as small to medium enterprises.

NIB Holdings Ltd

NIB Holdings operates in five segments: Australian Residents Health Insurance, which consists of Co.'s main product offering within the Australian private health insurance industry; New Zealand Residents Health Insurance, which consists of Co.'s main product offering within the New Zealand private health insurance Industry; International (Inbound) Health Insurance, which consists of Co.'s offering of health insurance products for international students and workers; World Nomads Group, which consists of Co.'s distribution of travel insurance products; and NIB Options, which consists of Co.'s facilitation of access to cosmetic and dental treatment both overseas and in Australia.

Qantas Airways Limited

Qantas Airways is engaged in the operation of international and domestic air transportation services, the provision of freight services and the operation of a Frequent Flyer loyalty program. Co. comprises following operating segments: Qantas Domestic, Qantas International, and Jetstar Group, all of which comprises its passenger flying businesses; Qantas Freight, which comprises its air cargo and express freight business; and Qantas Loyalty, which comprises its customer loyalty recognition programs.

Scentre Group

Scentre Group is engaged in the ownership, development, design, construction, asset management, leasing and marketing activities with respect to its Australian and New Zealand portfolio of retail properties. Co.'s operational segment comprises the property investments and property and project management segments. The property investments segment includes existing shopping centers and completed developments. The property and project management segment includes property management and development. As of Dec 31 2015, Co. had a portfolio of 34 centers in Australia and six centers in New Zealand.

Seek Limited

Seek is engaged in the online matching of hirers and candidates with career opportunities and related services; investing in early stage businesses and technologies which are in or adjacent to the main online employment marketplace; and distribution and provision of vocational training and higher education courses. Co.'s ANZ Employment, Zhaopin, SEEK Asia, Brasil Online and OCC segments provides online employment and marketplace services. Co.'s Education segment includes the marketing, sale and distribution of education courses. Co. also has an Early Stage Ventures segment consisting of a portfolio of Australian and international investments.

Super Retail Group Limited

Super Retail Group's main activities are result in the following business segments: Auto, which include retailing of auto parts and accessories, tools and equipment; Leisure, which include retailing of boating, camping, outdoor equipment, fishing equipment and apparel; and Sports, which include retailing of sporting equipment, bicycles, bicycles accessories and apparel. Co.'s principal brands include Amart Sports for sports products such as equipment, apparel and associated accessories; BCF for an outdoor retailer; Rays for an outdoor entertainment and camping leisure retailer; Rebel for sporting and goods such as fitness equipment; and Supercheap Auto for automotive parts and accessories.

  • Shane worked for 17 years in Sydney-based senior research roles (economist, equity strategist and bond strategist) in global and regional investment banks and a domestic commercial bank prior to starting Macro Strategy Advisors. These roles straddled the asset classes making him uniquely positioned to advise multi-asset investors. He worked for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) for 3 years as a housing, commercial property and equity market analyst and a liquidity forecasting specialist.  He worked as a structural engineer in Queensland for 10 years prior to his career at the RBA.
