Slovenian Weekly Report 16.10.2017-20.10.2017

On 22nd October Slovenia held presidential elections, however these are of minor importance. Namely:

  • Firstly, president has little operational power in Slovenia, given its constitution, so parliamentary elections are far more important. These need to take place by July 2018 at latest (for 90 parliament members).
  • Secondly, incumbent president Pahor was deemed as almost sure to win in the end.

It the first round voters participation was slightly above 43.5%.

  • Current president Pahor received 47.1%, just shy of 50% which would secure his win in the first round.
  • Marjan Šarec received 25.0% of support (and will consequently run against Pahor in the second round), Romana Tomc 13.7% (SDS), Ljudmila Novak 7.2% (NSi) etc. Note the candidate from leading parliament party SMC secured only 1.7% of votes.

Second round of presidential elections are scheduled for 12th November 2017, however given the first round, Pahor seems all to sure to win, especially as he is seen more centrist and expectable to right and left wing political sphere.

All in all its far more important to know that parliamentary elections are ever closer and with it political campaigns. These will ever more dictate the daily operations, statements and actions …

Next weekly is scheduled for 6th November 2017.
