Earnings growth now ahead of our FY 16e estimates

  • CIB reported a very strong Q3 16A, supported by widening NIMs, up from 5.55% in Q3 15A and 5.51% in Q2 16 to 5.75%, even though it further derisked its balance sheet with excess liquidity continuing to be parked in the interbank market, positioning the bank better for the recent 300bps rate hike.
  • The bank also benefited from substantially lower credit charges (down 84% y/y to 50bps on an annualized basis, though at the expense of its coverage ratio), which also explains a drop in the effective tax rate asonly 80% of provisions are tax deductable.
