Key themes to play in Egypt

Attractive returns for portfolio investors

  • Full free float, rather than a managed one, should help Egypt avoid a prolonged currency predicament like Nigeria’s, with the current real exchange rate looking more attractive than ever during the past 15 years.
  • Bringing foreign ownership to 25% in the stock and bond market should result in inflows of USD 16.5bn (USD 4.5bn and USD 12bn respectively), further aided by the incremental USD 12bn IMF package.
  • We play banks (NIM expansion outweighing pressure on CAR) and stocks that benefit from USD hedges, while avoiding MENA stocks (mainly consumer) with high EGP exposure and/or a short-term margin squeeze.
