Construction | RSA Cement Market Update - May '19

Mar '19 (on a year to date basis) imports appear to be in line with the levels in the same period last year. Unfortunately, though not unexpectedly, the Feb ‘19 price increases have been reversed in coastal markets especially with regards to 32.5 grade cements declining c.–13% (42.5 prices declined by low-single digits). Positively, inland prices remained flat m/m and it appears there is limited scope for prices to decline as all major producers have increased prices (no competition from cheap imports). Surprisingly, Gauteng registered the highest level of building plans passed in almost 12 years with the increase due to residential building projects. We believe the expected demand should support prices in the province.
