Intel was founded in 1968 by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore (Moore’s law). At first
the company was an early developer of SRAM and DRAM memory chips but later it
invested heavily in microprocessors which with the rise of PCs became its core business.
In the last 5 years, Intel has been shifting his business towards data-rich markets such as
cloud, AI, VR, and currently designs and produces semiconductors which include CPUs,
memory, storage and in 2020 GPUs. Its strategy has been focusing more on data centers
and shifting away from personal computing. Recently also sold McAfee and wearable
business and is in process of selling 5G smartphone modem business in order to focus on
core areas of the company.
Intel is a data-centric company. The company's operating segments are: Data Center Group, which develops platforms for compute, storage, and network functions; Internet of Things Group, which facilitates its customers creating, storing, and processing data; Mobileye, which provides assistance and automation solutions; Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group, which provides memory and storage products based on Intel? Optane? technology and Intel? 3D NAND technology; Programmable Solutions Group, which provides programmable semiconductors; and Client Computing Group, which connects people to data, allowing each person to focus, create, and engage in ways that unlock their individual potential.
