University of Phoenix Congratulates Retired Command Sgt. Maj. John Ramirez for Receiving the Association of Latino Professionals For America 2016 Veteran of the Year Award

No matter the time of year, it is important to recognize not only those who serve for the U.S. military, but those who serve past traditional expectations. University of Phoenix is proud to honor retired Command Sgt. Maj. John Ramirez, dean of operations for the School of Advanced Studies, for his Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) 2016 Veteran of the Year Award. The award recognizes Ramirez as a Latino U.S. veteran who exemplifies courage, honor and perseverance.

“Throughout his career, Mr. Ramirez has demonstrated a commitment to service — first proudly serving our nation in the United States Army and now continuing to assist veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life,” said Alain Monroy, ALPFA Phoenix Chapter president. “It is this unwavering promise to help those around him that makes Mr. Ramirez such a deserving individual for this award. We at ALPFA commend him for his service and applaud the example he has become.”

Ramirez spent 27 years on active duty in the U.S. Army and retired as Command Sergeant Major. In retirement, he continues to support service members by assisting transitioning veterans in finding employment and educational opportunities. Specifically, his efforts have been focused on supporting and mentoring young Latino students and professionals as a member of AZHCC, AAHHE, CCME, American Legion and Chairman of the Corporate Advisory Board for the Phoenix Chapter of ALPFA.

“Our service men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve our country, and their accomplishments need to be recognized. John in particular is very deserving of this award because of his decorated and selfless military career, and the work he does now to serve his fellow veterans and the community,” said Adam Such, vice president of military and veteran affairs, University of Phoenix. “The University is proud to recognize him not only as an accomplished veteran, but also as a Latino leader, staff member and vital member of the Phoenix community.”

Ramirez has been with University of Phoenix since 2004, and also earned his Master’s Degree in Administration of Justice and Security/Global Homeland Security from the University in 2014. Serving many roles throughout his tenure, he currently operates as the dean of operations for the School of Advanced Studies, where his mission is to deliver the best student experience possible.

“The U.S. military tremendously shaped the values that are instilled in me today,” said Ramirez. “While I am just one of thousands of Latino American veterans, I am proud to be part of a community of patriotic minorities who bravely stepped up to serve our nation.”

The award was officially presented at the ALPFA Awards Gala on Aug. 9, 2016. More about Ramirez’ story can be seen here.
