CEMEX Reaffirms Its Commitment to Biodiversity Protection in the COP13

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced today its participation in the thirteenth reunion of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP13), held in Cancun, Mexico, during December. Within the framework of the Conference, CEMEX reiterated its active role in protecting the biodiversity in our planet through the signing of the Cancun Business and Biodiversity Pledge.

CEMEX participated in the 2016 Business and Biodiversity Forum – Mainstreaming Biodiversity: Opportunities for Businesses, focused on integrating biodiversity into the planning and operation of productive sectors including conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in business plans, beyond corporate social responsibility strategies.

During the Forum, Juan Romero, President of CEMEX Mexico, signed on behalf of the company the mentioned pledge by which CEMEX joins other signatory companies in the pursuit of concrete actions that deliver solutions for the conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources.

“The business community must take an active role in the environment protection and the transition to a green economy. Thanks to the scope of our operations, CEMEX is uniquely placed to generate positive impacts on biodiversity through the restoration of quarries and spaces in which we operate,” said Juan Romero, President of CEMEX Mexico. “An example of CEMEX’s commitment to biodiversity protection is El Carmen natural reserve, with 15 years of conservation and biodiversity restoration programs. These efforts have granted El Carmen several recognitions, including the 2016 National Award of Ecological Merit, granted to the company by Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources last August.”

Comprised of 196 countries, the Conference of the Parties is the highest governing body of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. In its thirteenth edition, about ten thousand participants, including representatives of the countries parties, observer countries, international organizations and others interested met to negotiate agreements and commitments that give impulse to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity

CEMEX is a global building materials company that provides high quality products and reliable service to customers and communities in more than 50 countries. Celebrating its 110th anniversary, CEMEX has a rich history of improving the well-being of those it serves through innovative building solutions, efficiency advancements, and efforts to promote a sustainable future.
