Get Your Fitness Center Locker Room in Great Shape

As the “get back into shape” New Year’s resolution hype begins to settle down at fitness centers across the U.S., now is a great time to get locker rooms back into shape. To help facilities recover after their busiest season of the year, Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS) today offers deep cleaning tips for locker room maintenance.

“Most people workout to improve their health, so it’s important to clean locker rooms and keep them free of mold and germs that can spread infection,” said John Engel, Director of Marketing, Cintas. “While retail stores catch a break after the New Year, gym traffic spikes, requiring deeper and more frequent cleaning in order to maintain member satisfaction.”

Fitness centers should implement an effective and routine deep cleaning schedule, while also ensuring staff members use the correct cleaning procedures. Focus on cleaning the following areas of a locker room

To reduce the potential for infectious diseases to spread within locker rooms, fitness centers should implement an effective and routine deep cleaning schedule, while also ensuring staff members use the correct cleaning procedures. Cintas recommends focusing on the following areas of a locker room:

  • Floors. Because locker rooms are often damp environments, both carpeted and tiled floors can become a breeding ground for bacteria, fungus and unpleasant odor. Implementing regular deep cleans can help to prevent the spread of bacteria and fungus1 caused illnesses such as athlete’s foot, ringworm and more.
  • Lockers. The mixture of humidity, soiled clothing, shoes and wet towels in lockers can quickly cause unpleasant odors. Conduct weekly locker deep cleans with an effective disinfectant to eliminate odor-causing bacteria growth and remove any soiled clothes and towels.
  • Gym towels. Wet fitness center towels can quickly accumulate germs and bacteria. Make sure gym members have a secure place to dispose of used towels, and be sure to clean that space daily to limit mold growth. Also, consider partnering with a professional laundry service provider who knows how to effectively launder soiled gym towels.
  • Hot spots. Sinks, countertops, benches and handles on restroom doors and lockers are considered “hot spots” and should be cleaned on a routine basis throughout the day. Because they can harbor infection-causing bacteria, make sure gym staffers are using a disinfecting cleaning solution with the right dilution and dwell time to effectively kill germs and bacteria.
