PG&E Ranks in Top Five, Leads California in New Nationwide Energy Efficiency Scorecard

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today announced it ranked as one of the top five energy-efficient energy companies in the country on the new Utility Energy Efficiency Scorecard released by the industry association American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Ranked third in the country, PG&E led California as the top-placed utility in the state for energy efficiency.

This year, ACEEE launched its first edition of the Utility Energy Efficiency Scorecard, which assesses energy efficiency for the 51 largest electric utilities in the United States based on their energy efficiency policies and programs in 2015. The report concludes that energy companies across the country have a clear commitment to energy efficiency.

“Energy efficiency has been at the center of California’s energy policy for more than 40 years – successfully keeping per capita energy usage nearly flat since the 1970s. Every day, we partner with families, communities and businesses to help them reduce energy waste through energy efficiency programs, rebates and other tools,” said Vincent Davis, PG&E's Senior Director of Energy Efficiency.

Providing a benchmark and roadmap for the industry, the new assessment tracks energy efficiency for the country’s energy companies out of 50 total possible points across three categories:

  • Quantitative savings and spending performance
  • Program diversity and emerging areas
  • Savings targets, business models and evaluation

For the three energy companies in California, ACEEE highlighted the strong emphasis on the diversity of their energy efficiency programs and focus on offering emerging, different programs to customers. Diving into the specific metrics, PG&E received the top place for offering programs in emerging areas in 2015. This includes zero net energy (ZNE) building programs offered by only eight utilities in the country, including PG&E.

In the ranking, PG&E placed third overall as well as in each main category, capturing 75 percent of the total 50 available points. In 2015, the year the scorecard covers, PG&E helped customers save $227 million on their energy bills through energy efficiency programs.

In 2016, California tied Massachusetts for the top spot in ACEEE’s annual State Energy Efficiency Scorecard, demonstrating the statewide focus on energy efficiency.
