Dr. Sam Bozzette Joins Premier Inc. to Lead Its Research Division

Premier Inc. (NASDAQ: PINC), a leading healthcare improvement company, has named Sam Bozzette, MD, PhD, vice president and chief scientist of its retrospective and interventional research division, Premier Applied Sciences.

An internationally-recognized researcher and physician executive, Dr. Bozzette will provide strategic clinical, analytical and operational direction to further grow the Premier Applied Sciences research business and improve the overall quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of care.

“Dr. Bozzette is a leader in medical and social sciences, and has more than 25 years of experience working with academic and non-profit healthcare providers to improve clinical decision-making practices, care delivery efficiency and effectiveness, and population health management,” said Leigh Anderson, chief information officer at Premier. “We are thrilled to have him on board to lead Premier’s data-driven research efforts to set new standards in care delivery through strategic partnerships with healthcare industry leaders across the U.S.”

Premier Applied Sciences, formerly known as Premier Research Services, combines data and analytics with objective clinical outcomes analyses, and partnerships with health systems, life sciences companies, academic institutions and professional societies to develop, teach, test and research care delivery practices and real-world interventions for healthcare improvement. It offers real-world research and analytics, retrospective research, healthcare education, clinical trial innovation and data licensing services.

“With a goal to address the increasing need of health systems to better understand how to improve care for patients while promoting smarter spending for each healthcare dollar, Premier Applied Sciences seeks to create an evolving learning healthcare system that is backed by data, research and proven best practices,” said Dr. Bozzette. “I am so pleased to be joining this team of seasoned researchers and looking forward to advancing Premier’s work as a leading partner for industry organizations that are taking steps to demonstrate value through science.”

Dr. Bozzette most recently served as vice president of Medical Affairs-Americas and Healthcare Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) for bioMerieux, a leading diagnostics company, and as a physician executive at Cerner. Before that, he was senior natural scientist at the RAND Corporation, and a professor of Medicine and of International Relations at the University of California San Diego where he retains an adjunct appointment. Dr. Bozzette has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications, including over a dozen in the New England Journal of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and an elected member of American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the Pacific Council on International Policy.

Premier Applied Sciences accesses data from the Premier Healthcare Database, which integrates clinical outcomes information from 700 hospitals and health systems, and nearly 150 million unique patients for evidence- and population-based analyses. This data supports both prospective and interventional research, as well as co-development initiatives, such as Premier’s collaboration with Merck (NYSE:MRK) to jointly develop and test new solutions to improve vaccination rates and chronic care delivery. Another example is the QUANTUM AF national quality improvement research study to improve stroke risk management among hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation.
