Waste Management Announces Plan to Increase Quarterly Dividend Payments and Authorization for up to $750 Million in Share Repurchases

Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WM) today announced that its Board of Directors has approved a 3.7% increase in the planned quarterly dividend rate, from $0.41 to $0.425 per share. On an annual basis, the per share dividend increases from $1.64 to $1.70. This marks the fourteenth consecutive year that the Company has increased its planned quarterly dividend.

The Company also received authorization from its Board of Directors to repurchase $750 million of the Company’s common stock. This new authorization is effective immediately and replaces the previous authorization, under which Waste Management repurchased $575 million of its common stock.

Jim Fish, President and Chief Executive Officer of Waste Management, Inc., said, “The announcement of an increase in our quarterly dividend and share repurchase authorization demonstrates our long-term commitment to providing shareholder value. We continue to see strength in the cash flow generation of our business and expect our focus on improving core price, growing high margin volumes, and containing costs to drive growth in free cash flow.(a) In 2016, we expect to return over $1.4 billion to our shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. Our 2017 capital allocation plan positions us to continue this trend of strong shareholder returns.”

It is expected that the first increased dividend will be paid in March of 2017.

Future share repurchases will be made at the discretion of management and will depend on several factors, including the Company’s net earnings, financial condition, cash required for future business plans and other factors deemed relevant.
