Wolters Kluwer’s POC Advisor Receives Top Recognition in Fierce Innovation Awards: Healthcare Edition

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today that it has been recognized by this year’s Fierce Innovation Awards: Healthcare Edition, a unique awards program from the publisher of FierceHealthcare, FierceHealthIT and FierceMobileHealthPayer. Wolters Kluwer’s clinical surveillance product, POC Advisor™, received top honors in the “Clinical Information Management” category as well as an overall award of “Best in Show: Fiercest Cost-Saving Solution.”

The Fierce Innovation Awards promotes the competitive spirit and initiative that spurs the development and implementation of game-changing services, technologies and solutions. Winners were selected by a distinguished panel of CIOs from renowned U.S. hospitals and healthcare systems, including Aspirus, Cook Children’s Health Care System and JFK Health System, among others. A complete list of judges can be found at https://www.fierceinnovationawards.com/healthcare/2016#our_judges.

All applications were evaluated based on the following criteria: care efficiency, competitive advantage, financial impact/value, market need, patient experience/satisfaction, quality of care and patient outcomes and overall fierceness and innovation. Finalists were selected based on calculation of the judges’ scores in each area.

Wolters Kluwer is being recognized for its innovative, industry-leading product, POC Advisor, which is initially being used to accelerate the early detection and treatment of sepsis. Using automated, real-time surveillance to aggregate, normalize and analyze patient data from disparate clinical systems, POC Advisor sends patient-specific alerts and evidence-based treatment advice directly to the point of care via mobile devices and clinical portals.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as part of the 2016 Fierce Innovation Awards,” said Sean Benson, Vice President and General Manager of POC Advisor at Wolters Kluwer Clinical Software Solutions. “We are proud to be held up as an example of the great benefits to be gained by effectively leveraging health IT and patient data to improve outcomes. Our team has worked tirelessly for years to create this unique, life-saving solution and it is gratifying to see our efforts recognized by both JAMIA and the panel of judges.”

In a clinical study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), POC Advisor demonstrated a high level of alert accuracy, reaching sensitivity and specificity rates of 95% and 82% respectively, thereby eliminating the common problem of alert fatigue among clinicians. To achieve this unprecedented accuracy, the platform runs patient data against hundreds of clinical rules that account for comorbid acute infections, medication abnormalities and chronic diseases specific to the individual. If sepsis results are positive, alerts and evidence-based advice are immediately sent to clinicians to ensure early treatment.

The study results showed a 53% reduction in sepsis mortality and a 30% decline in sepsis-related 30-day readmissions. Annually, Huntsville clinicians are estimated to prevent approximately 200 deaths hospital-wide through the utilization of POC Advisor, while the hospital stands to realize a significant reduction in the financial toll of sepsis.
