University Applications Grow in Ontario—What Does it Mean for Enrolments?
Ontario universities saw a flurry of applications from Ontario secondary school students, also known as the 101s or domestic students, according to the latest statistics from the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre. These figures do not include nonsecondary school applicants (i.e., mature students and transfer, international, and out-of-province students), which will be reported on in April. The February 2022 numbers point to an 8.4% increase in the total number of applications compared with the prior year, largely driven by a noticeable increase in the average number of applications per student, which increased to 5.6 from 5.2. On the other hand, the total number of applicants rose by a relatively smaller 1.7%, partly because of the growth in the university-age cohort in Ontario. After spending the bulk of the last two years studying online because of the pandemic, students are possibly shopping around much more for potential programs in an effort to ensure a spot for themselves.
