Integrating Renewables: Opportunities and Challenges for Developers and Investors

Over the past decade, the pace of renewable energy development has accelerated significantly, with some areas of Europe now deriving as much as 40% of their electricity generation from variable resource energy such as wind and solar. Integrating this level of renewable energy into the electricity grid presents a number of well-known challenges. In the commentary “Integral Renewables: Increasing the Integration of Renewables into the Grid,” DBRS examined key methods that can be used to address these challenges, such as advanced forecasting, deployment of storage technologies, demand response and transmission infrastructure. In this follow-up commentary, DBRS reviews how successful grid operators are using these and other techniques with an integrative approach to deploy renewable energy and looks at what continued adoption of these techniques may mean for developers, investors and lenders to renewable projects.
