Container Shipping 2018 - Sector Update
Although average rates strengthened in the third quarter of 2018, providing some respite to container carriers, the momentum seems to be short-lived. The peak season is behind us and the onset of fourth quarter has coincided with the intensifying trade war between the US and China, leading the IMF to downgrade its global economic growth estimates. Moreover, elevated bunker prices and an uncertain freight movement might spell more trouble for the already depressed share prices. Meanwhile, some shippers looking to front load their cargoes from China to the US – in anticipation of fresh tariffs on Chinese goods from January 2019 – could boost volume growth in the short run.
