EconoInsights_Monthly Economic and Capital Market Overview_May 2024

Bangladesh's major economic indicators have been under strain, although overall GDP growth has been projected to remain stable at 5.8%, according to BBS’s provisional estimate for the current fiscal year. Exports hit a six-month low, while the financial account deficit nears USD 10 billion, exerting continuous pressure on the country’s external balance amidst persistently high inflation and dwindling foreign exchange reserves. However, the recent adoption of the crawling peg system is expected to ease down the exchange rate volatility as well as enhance foreign currency inflows in the form of exports and remittances, which is expected to provide a cushion to the country's much-needed fiscal space.
