Weathering a storm

Is Private Equity (ISGSY) makes direct private equity investments in mid-sized Turkish companies with the aim of providing capital gains and attractive dividends. 2016 was a year of considerable uncertainty in Turkey, creating challenging market conditions for ISGSY’s investee companies and for the wider Turkish economy. Despite this, valuations have remained resilient, with a like-for-like fall of 2.5% versus a reduction of c 4% in 2015, which was arguably a less turbulent year. Including a further TRY10m investment in one of its leisure businesses, PE investments comprised 54% of total assets at 31 December 2016, up from 51% at the end of FY15. The discount to NAV remains over 50%, but further political stabilisation following a referendum in April 2017 could cause this to narrow.

During a turbulent year for the Turkish financial markets and economy, the 1.2% increase in NAV per share reported by Is Private Equity (ISGSY), supported by good growth in real terms by investee companies, is a very positive outcome. With some calm returning to Turkish markets, a further moderation in inflation and interest rates would be positive and a pick-up in M&A activity may provide opportunities for the capital recycling that ISGSY targets.

Metro Bank - Profitability achieved and targets reiterated

Metro Bank (Metro) has published a trading update that shows that it returned to profitability in October. This is consistent with previous guidance of a return to profitability during Q424 and the bank has reiterated its guidance for a mid- to upper single-digit FY25 return on tangible equity (RoTE). Datatec - Operational focus drives H125 profit growth

In H125, while revenue declined due to mix and net revenue accounting, Datatec grew gross profit by 3.5% y-o-y and adjusted EBITDA by 18.5%, resulting in a 56.2% increase in underlying EPS (uEPS). Both Westcon and Logicalis International delivered strong profit growth, while Logicalis Latin America managed to offset lower revenues with reductions in its cost base. Management continues to expect a better financial performance from all three businesses in FY25. We have upgraded our forecasts to reflect the strong H125 performance, lifting FY25 uEPS by 10% and reducing year-end net debt by 12%.
