Update: 40 years young

At the start of its 41st year of operations, Quarto delivered a strong FY15 performance, as indicated by Januaryâ€™s pre-close update. Revenue and margin were both ahead, there was notable progress on debt reduction and a step-up in the dividend. With the activists off the share register as of November 2015 (their shares placed with a spread of institutional funds), the board structure is also now being normalised, with two independent non-executive appointments (one to take the chair). Investment in content, talent, sales and marketing and systems underpin the growth now coming through, with acquisitions likely to supplement organic progress.

Update: Strong start to FY16

Quarto has had a good start to 2016 with the momentum from FY15 carrying into the first quarter, normally the quietest period of the year. The natural seasonality gives a revenue bias to H2, which management has said will be greater this year, and our full year forecasts are unchanged. Further meaningful progress has been made on debt reduction, consistent with our year-end forecast of $53.5m, achieved without compromise on investment in IP, the lifeblood of the business. The rating continues to trade at a substantial discount to other smaller publishing stocks.

Update: Strong Q4 delivers FY15 ahead of forecasts

Quartoâ€™s profits are H2 weighted and, in FY15, Q4 proved a particularly strong trading period. At end Q315, the group was on track to meet FY15 expectations; at the year-end update, the indication is that results will be ahead of forecasts, allowing a rise in dividend. Net debt of $59.7m was $21.7m lower than the 2011 peak, reflecting good cash conversion. Sylvania Platinum - Annual guidance maintained, despite strike

Sylvania has maintained annual production guidance despite Q324 results being affected by a 22-day strike, resulting in 10% lower production. The PGM basket price was stable during the quarter, with positive platinum momentum offset by palladium weakness and rhodium prices stable. Operating costs increased by 5.6%, in line with expectations. FY24 production guidance is for 75,000–76,000oz, despite the challenges in Q324. 1Spatial’s FY24 results reflected robust momentum for the enterprise business and continued improvement in the revenue mix, with investment in growth suppressing margin and cash generation. This investment phase will continue in FY25 to lay the foundation for transformational growth from 1Streetworks and in the US in the coming years. Our scenario analysis indicates the upside from successful execution is significant, with further wins for 1Streetworks and in the US being the key catalysts for more rapid, operationally geared growth to be priced in.

Datatec - FY24 underlying EPS more than doubles y-o-y

In a second more detailed trading update for FY24, Datatec confirmed revenue growth of 6% to $5.46bn, with Westcon International delivering excellent performance, Logicalis International having a strong H2 and Logicalis Latin America affected by difficult market conditions in Argentina and Brazil. The company also provided provisional EPS data, with reported EPS likely to come in ahead of our forecast and underlying EPS just below our forecast. We maintain our forecasts pending FY24 results on or around 27 May.
