​Executive Summary

- UK votes to leave the EU, leaves global financial markets in uncertainty

  o Short-term implications of the Brexit for Sri Lanka:

  •  a possible slowdown in foreign investment inflows amid global market volatility and uncertainty over the timing of sovereign bond issue will likely increase the strain on our external balances
  •  depreciatory pressure on the LKR against the USD

  o For now this doesn’t change our end 2016 forecasts for rates and LKR

- IMF program comes with challenging reforms, government commitment key for itssuccess

- Moody’s outlook downgrade an indication of the challenging task ahead


· Focus 1 – 2015 was the year of the consumer. In this focus we take a closer look at household consumption; which spending categories grew the most and which took a downturn

· Focus 2 – As global economic growth continues to disappoint, economies have resorted to desperate measures to revive growth and bring back inflation. Negative interest rates is one such unconventional measure adopted by a few countries in the world. This focus provides a quick snapshot of the background and the success of this measure so far and varied views and critiques around it
