UK: Dec-19 sales smashed by statisticians

- The ONS reported retail statistics that simultaneously show an average end to an expansionary year and one of the worst periods on record. Attempts to adjust for Black Friday’s belated sampling have had massive unintended spill-over effects.
- Dismal headline data raise the risk of GDP contracting in Q4, and the BoE may not have the tolerance to look through noisy data. The risk of a rate cut on 30 January continues to rise, especially amid an emphasis on so-called risk management.
