Intermarket Pulse: Pakistan Banks: Super tax provision relaxed; marginally positive

  • As per media reports and industry checks, amendments to the Finance Bill 2018-19 include relaxation in Super Tax for banks where the tax effective for CY18 will be 4% (vs. 7% previously) and would imply an effective tax rate of 39% (42% previously). Tax would be progressively lower by 1% p.a. thereon.
  • While this may be earnings positive for CY18 (+5.2%), we expect this to normalize as effective tax rate rises by 1% from previous estimates; CY19-20F (Revised Super Tax: 3%, 2% vs. 2%, 1% previously). Impact on earnings and valuation is therefore limited to above 0.5% on average for the banks in our sample space.
  • We expect names with higher concentration of local operations to stand out, while superior D/Y should lead to downside protection, as we prefer MCB and UBL for their yield. MCB and UBL trade at CY18 P/B of 1.43x/1.11x and offer a D/Y of 8.1/7.8%.
