Key Highlights

The construction industry is defined as the value of work put in place annually in the residential and non-residential segments. Civil engineering work is excluded. Where possible data has not been seasonally adjusted.

The Egyptian construction industry had total revenues of $4.3bn in 2016, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% between 2012 and 2016.

The Non-Residential segment was the industry's most lucrative in 2016, with total revenues of $3.9bn, equivalent to 90.1% of the industry's overall value.

The growth of the Egyptian industry has been driven by foreign investment in major infrastructure projects, as well as by industrial construction consequent to the growing output of related sectors. However, the liberalization of the local currency from the price of dollar in late 2016 devastated the industry. Public investment in infrastructure and affordable housing as part of the ongoing development plan of the country largely supported construction activities in 2016.
