METALS WEEKLY: India steel prices decline on cheaper imports

 

  • Indian steel: Long product (TMT Mumbai) prices were down ~1% WoW. Sponge iron prices were down ~1% WoW while scrap prices were up ~3% WoW. NMDC has cut iron ore prices by INR200-300/t. Pellet prices were lower. Domestic HRC prices were down ~4% WoW, but remain at a premium to import parity prices.
  • Raw materials: Iron ore prices (China CFR) were down ~9% WoW on weakness in the Chinese steel market. Thermal coal prices were down ~5% WoW. Coking coal prices were down ~2% WoW. China’s pellet import prices were down ~9% WoW, with spreads over iron ore declining. Chinese graphite electrode prices were marginally higher.
  • Europe: HRC prices were down ~1% WoW. CIS HRC export prices were down another ~2% WoW. Rotterdam scrap prices remained unchanged.
  • China steel prices: Chinese local rebar and HRC prices were up ~1-2% WoW. Export price of rebar were down ~5%, while HRC prices were down ~3% WoW.
  • Base metals: Aluminum (cash LME) was up ~1% WoW. Alumina, Copper (cash LME) and Zinc (cash LME) prices were unchanged, but Lead was up ~1% WoW. Brent crude prices were unchanged WoW.
