TELECOM: Bharti/VIL continue to lose active subs; RJio adds but pace slows; Bharti overtakes RJio in incremental MBB adds

 

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released subscriber data for the month of Jan'19. Key highlights:

  • Net active subscriber base declined by 3.8m MoM to 1,023m in the month. Bharti/Vodafone Idea (VIL) lost 4.6m/6.2m active subscribers. Both companies are potentially witnessing the impact of the rollout of minimum recharge plans on a pan-India basis.
  • RJio's active subscriber adds slowed down to 6.3m due to lower Jiophone offtake.
  • Broadband subscriber adds stood at a robust 21.4m (+6.6m in Dec-18), reaching 521m (51% of active subscriber base).
  • Bharti overtook RJio in incremental MBB adds. Bharti accounted for a significant 47% share of incremental MBB subscriber adds by the top three players, followed by RJio (~44%). Vodafone Idea accounted for a meager 9%.
