CE Utilities Sector Update - Protected by hedging, but not invulnerable

Utilities should be more resilient towards an economic downturn following the coronavirus-driven lockdowns: Generation companies in Central Europe have hedged at least 80% of their 2020e sales by now and utilities' other operations are largely regulated, which means that any volume-related decline in earnings should be compensated for in two years' time by local regulators. However, some exposure to short-term price weakness remains, foremost for Verbund, and power price curves have shifted downwards, as industrial output is forecast to recover more slowly than it fell, energy commodities such as gas and coal are equally down on their own oversupply issues and only CO2 emission allowances follow equity market trends, despite fundamentals telling a different story.
