Turkey Wake-up call: Macro, Political and Equity News, 10th August

BIST retreated 0.15% yesterday as the afternoon weakness put an end to the market's 9-day winning streak. Banks fell behind for the second consecutive day amid the 0.83% drop in their sector index. SISE, PETKM, PGSUS, EKGYO, KORDS, CIMSA, GLYHO, and KARSN led the gainers while FROTO, EREGL, KCHOL, ALBRK, and Koza Group names were among the day's weakest names. Today, our local macro agenda showcases unemployment statistics for June'21 to be released at 10AM local time. Seasonally-adjusted unemployment had declined 0.6pp from a month ago to a 13.2% in May as the 481k decrease in labour force (labour force participation was sequentially down 0.8pp to 50.5%) outpaced the 216k monthly decline in the number of employed. BIST seems headed for a flattish start in absence of major drivers in either direction. U.S. futures are marginally lower while Asian equity indices are mostly trading with small gains for the day.
