Turkey Wake-up call: Macro, Political and Equity News, 18th March

BIST extended its recent gains with a 2.14% increase yesterday in a broad-based move that propped up the benchmark index above its 2,050 resistance. Banks lagged the broader market with the 1.42% climb in their sector index amid pressure on GARAN while other private lenders performed visibly better. FROTO, EREGL, KRDMD, KCHOL, TUPRS, DOHOL and TTRAK led the non-bank gainers for the day while INDES, DOAS, ENKAI, and KARSN stood out among the handful of decliners in the BIST100 space. Coming to this morning, our local macro agenda is mostly muted and eyes will again be on global markets for a sense of direction. We predict an uptick start for the BIST given slight gains in the majority of peers. Lira is also stable with the USDTRY cruising around the 14.75 level.
