Turkey Wake-up call: Macro, Political and Equity News, 21st December

BIST climbed 0.64% on Friday, carrying its weekly gains to 2.74%. BIST100 quickly turned north after a wobbly open on Friday morning and tested 1,410 level in the afternoon. Banks outperformed with the 1.16% increase in their sector index as TSKB and AKBNK caught some bids. EKGYO, OTKAR, CIMSA, TAVHL, CLEBI, ISGYO, ENJSA, and ISDMR topped the non-bank gainers while EREGL, AYGAZ, AYGAZ, YATAS, TURSG, and Koza Group names were among the fewer decliners. Coming to start of the new week, our local maro agenda showcases the November'20 Consumer Confidence Index compiled by TurkStat due at 10AM local time. In the revised series, the index had declined 2.2% on a sequential basis to 80.1 in November. BIST seems off to a downtick start as the global risk appetite is hurt by the new strain of the virus leading to tighter travel restrictions in the U.K and Europe. U.S. futures are up a few points while Asian markets are mostly trading lower. Lira is also a tad weaker with USDTRY pair at 7.6850 levels vs 7.6561 at Friday's closing bell.
