Turkey Wake-up call: Macro, Political and Equity News, 28th December
BIST closed virtually unchanged on Friday as earlier gains fizzled out in the afternoon, but managed to pocket a 1.26% gain for the whole week. Benchmark BIST100 opened on an uptick on Friday and gradually climbed to 1,438 level before reversing its course after 2:30PM. Banks were somewhat weaker with the 0.39% loss in their sector index. TCELL, KOZAL, KRDMD, HEKTS, GUBRF, TKFEN, ISMEN, OYAKC, and LOGO topped the gainers while GARAN, PETKM, CCOLA, CLEBI, DOCO, TATGD, and IPEKE were among the weak names. Coming to start of the new week, local macro agenda is muted while global markets are in a positive mood after President Trump abruptly signed the USD900bn pandemic relief package last night after days of resistance, so we anticipate a positive open for the BIST. U.S. futures are up c.0.65% in early trades and Asian equities are almost all trading in the green. Lira is a tad weaker though with the USDTRY pair at 7.57 levels vs 7.5529 at Friday's closing bell.
