Turkey Wake-up call: Macro, Political and Equity News, 31st December

BIST slipped 1.68% yesterday as stocks reversed their morning gains with the selling pressure in the afternoon hours. Banks fared better with an only 0.20% drop in their sector index as YKBNK and GARAN managed to close in positive territory. TOASO, HEKTS, AKSA, ISMEN, VESBE, and ISGYO led the small batch of non-bank gainers in the BIST100 universe while aviation stocks, TCELL, PETKM, BIMAS, EREGL, SISE, KCHOL, ARCLK, and AYGAZ were among the weakest names. Coming to the last day of the year, our local macro agenda showcases November'21 Foreign Trade numbers due at 10AM local time. Bloomberg consensus for monthly deficit at USD5.30bn vs preliminary data released earlier by the Ministry of Customs & Trade that are indicating a USD5.33bn (+5.4% yoy) trade gap for the month (Exports USD21.47bn (+33.4% yoy) // Imports USD26.79bn (+26.7% yoy)). We predict a sideways start for the BIST given mixed signals from global stock markets and some weakness in lira (USDTRY around the 13.36 mark in early trades vs 13.0948 at yesterday's closing bell). Happy new year!
