Turkey Wake-up call: Macro, Political and Equity News, 6th April

BIST climbed 0.83% yesterday amid strength in some key industrials. Index had a downtick open but quickly turned north in early trades to climb to 1,437 level around where it spent a good part of the session. Market found some further momentum in the final 1.5 hours and closed near its daily peak. Banks resumed their sluggish performance after their jump last Friday and their index was down 0.48% for the day, partly reflecting the cash dividend payment in GARAN. Gains in industrials & services companies like EREGL, ASELS, PETKM, EKGYO, CCOLA, TAVHL, PGSUS, TTRAK, and GUBRF pushed the market up while BIMAS, VESTL, MGROS, ALKIM, MAVI, and SELEC were among the fewer weak spots in the BIST100 universe. Today, our local macro agenda involves Central Bank's March'21 real effective FX rate at 2:30PM local time. The CPI-based index is expected to soften from its 11-month high of 69.69 mark for the previous month given ~9.5% depreciation of lira vs the EUR+USD currency basket dwarfing the 1.08% headline CPI print for March. BIST seems headed for a downtick start amid softness in global markets while lira is flattish in early going. U.S. futures are down c.0.2% and Asian markets are mostly trading in the red.
