Value clothing retailer Matalan, which operates an out-of-town network of 227 stores in the UK, has released strong 2Q17/18 results (period ended 26 August 2017). Similar to the previous quarter, all product categories displayed satisfactory performances, especially in ladywear where Matalan has captured market share primarily from middle-market players. The share of homeware in the sales mix is growing (+20% yoy; 15% of sales) while online sales continued growing at a double-digit rate (6% of total). The ongoing refit program for selective stores showed good results, with sales in these stores outperforming the rest of the estate by 10%.
