Although economic conditions in Euro Area have not deteriorated materially, the outlook remains exceptionally uncertain amid elevated geopolitical tensions, higher energy prices, disruptions in supply chains, and a steep global tightening policy cycle.
Strong energy shocks, surging food prices as well as supply and demand imbalances have pushed the Eurozone inflation above 8%. Core inflation has climbed to 3.8%, the highest rate since records started. The dramatic rise in the cost of living is expected to have adverse ramifications on the economy and erode private consumption considerably over the next quarters. Future inflation dynamics will largely depend on geopolitical developments, trade disruptions, and supply constraints in commodity markets.
Indicators of economic activity signal that the growth momentum has notably slowed in the first half of 2022. The manufacturing PMI and retail sales are both in a steady decline over the past few months. However, labor markets remain tight with unemployment being at record low levels.
