Co-Founder Puts Spotlight on Safety at Speed Effort and AEye's Impact on Future Auto Safety
On October 4, WTR held a fireside chat with AEye’s Co-Founder, EVP, and Chief Strategy Officer Jordan Greene. The conversation can be accessed on demand and the full transcript is in this report. Greene highlighted that automotive fatalities have been on the rise since 2005, coincidentally when the smartphone was introduced. In fact, 2021 was the deadliest year in the US, with 43,000 fatalities. Greene went on to mention that the problem is 50% worse in the US than in the EU. This is most likely due to much larger vehicles. While larger vehicles are safer for the passengers, they are more dangerous for pedestrians. Greene expects the US government to set up minimum safety requirements in the near future. With October being National Pedestrian Safety Month, the highlight on pedestrians is timely. AEye’s lidar is expected to play a key role in achieving ‘Safety at Speed’. Greene believes AEye’s high performance, like its ability to see pedestrians at 300 meters, is a key differentiator. Once lidar is deployed in large numbers, Greene envisions a much safer world for pedestrians and drivers. Greene believes high-performance lidar as the last piece of the puzzle and its combination with radar, video cameras, and other sensors, will make blind spots a thing of the past and reduce the number of pedestrians being hit. We could see the government mandating some type of safety performance once lidar is scaled up enough to bring down the cost. Before that, we could see lidar safety systems being demanded by consumers of higher-end cars as an added safety feature. AEye’s unique software-defined lidar solution enables advanced driver assistance, vehicle autonomy, smart infrastructure, and logistics applications that save lives and propel the future of transportation and mobility. AEye’s 4Sight™ Intelligent Sensing Platform, with its adaptive sensor-based operating system, focuses on what matters most: delivering faster, more accurate, and reliable information. AEye’s 4Sight™ products, built on this platform, are ideal for dynamic applications that require precise measurement imaging to ensure safety and performance. AEye has a global presence through its offices in Germany, Korea, and the US.
